Frequently Asked Questions About Therapy

This is a big decision and I want you to be informed.

Where do sessions take place?

I am a Certified Telemental Health Professional and meet with clients virtually online and in person at an office in Summerlin, Las Vegas, Nevada. I do not have current availability for new clients in person, but we may be able to schedule for online sessions at this time.

I am licensed to see clients who reside anywhere in the state of Nevada.

How long is a counseling session?

Sessions are scheduled for 50 minutes, but plan for an hour of your time. Some people love extended time (90 minutes or 2 hours) once they are in the flow so we may arrange that, if appropriate. Your fee will be adjusted depending on the length we choose.

How much does a counseling session cost?

My fee is $185 for an individual counseling session. Longer sessions can be arranged (e.g. 90 minutes or 2 hours). Your fee will be adjusted depending on the length we choose.

What happens in a first session?

You've done it! You took the HARDEST step - the research, the first call, and the scheduling. Take a deep breath, pour a cup of tea, and rest assured that I'll be prepared to meet you.

In your first session, we'll sit down to talk about what led you to counseling and I'll have some questions for you to get clarity on our goals.

You may also have questions for me and about our process. Please share! I'm not a blank screen and welcome your feedback to build our relationship and maintain transparency.

What if we're not a good fit?

I've worked in mental health for over 24 years and agree with all of the research that shows the most important factor in a client's outcome in therapy is that they feel supported and understood by their counselor. That's my priority.

If it turns out that I'm not the best match for you, I will help you connect with another trusted referral who may have a skill set and approach that's a better fit. You've come this far and we'll make sure you get set up with great support.

How long will I be in counseling?

My goal is to get you in and "hit the ground running" to establish a clear treatment plan so you aren't in therapy forever. Of course, everyone is different and we will adjust our sessions to fit your unique needs. Because I work with challenging issues around anxiety, panic, trauma, and emotional stress, my clients usually average 8-12 months of therapy with me.

What if I'm not "techy" or great with computers?

Don't worry, I will help you get set up on my user-friendly and secure health platform. All you need is a smart phone, tablet, or laptop with a camera.

At the time of our appointment, you'll find a private space and get comfy to begin our session with the click of a button.

I joke that the pandemic gave me a "minor" in IT support, but I did learn all the tricks and strategies for telehealth so we'll be able to hit the ground running.

Do you take insurance?

Great question! I am considered an "out of network" provider on insurance panels.

I do not take insurance for a number of important reasons that I'd like you to understand as an informed consumer.

Health insurance companies can dictate how, and if, you receive counseling sessions. I believe you and I should decide what kind of services and treatment you deserve.

Furthermore, they require a mental health diagnosis and access to your confidential records. The insurance companies focus on “illness” rather than on overall health and wholeness, which runs contrary to my view of wellness and personal growth.

I respect your right to independence and privacy so if you would like to consider utilizing your insurance plan for "out of network benefits," we can see if you qualify. I would provide you with a "superbill," a medical receipt that you can submit directly to your insurance company through their website or portal. Depending on your insurance plan, they may reimburse you for some of your expense.

Can I use my Flexible Spending Account (FSA) or Health-Savings Account (HSA) to pay for sessions:

Yes! Counseling sessions are considered a medical expense and you can use your funds to pay directly for sessions. You just use your card like any other debit card when it's time to pay for your session.

How does the weekly session work?

If we decide to work together, we'll arrange a set weekly time that will be reserved exclusively for you.

What is your cancellation policy?

I get it - life happens. I kindly ask for 24 hours' notice to cancel or reschedule your appointment.

You will get a courtesy reminder several days before your appointment time and I purposely make it easy to reach me if you need to cancel or reschedule. Otherwise you'll be charged for the session fee, as I've reserved the time exclusively for you.
